  • Positive Changes in the New Jersey HVAC Industry

New Jersey and many of its municipalities have taken various steps over the past few years aimed at better regulating the HVAC industry and protecting consumers. So far, so good.

Implementing changes in the HVAC industry was long overdue. HVAC is the single largest mechanical system in most homes and businesses, accounting for the majority of energy consumed, and these systems must perform reliably year-round.

Several years ago, the State of New Jersey began requiring HVAC licenses for contractors. This means that, between theory, code, and business ethics, there is a higher standard that must be met. HVACR licensing is helping to weed out questionable HVAC contractors while elevating quality HVAC contractors. Most NJ townships now require submittal of Manual J and Manual D documentation as a minimum for new home construction. Others require air balancing be performed to verify HVAC systems are performing to design intent.

Each day it becomes more apparent that raising the bar is good for everyone involved, including consumers, HVAC contractors, manufacturers, design engineers, TAB (testing, adjusting and balancing) contractors, and consultants. This should have happened decades ago, as it did with electrical and plumbing, but as they say, better late than never.
