  • Maximizing Post-Summer Opportunities: Turning HVAC Service Calls into Fall Sales and Business Growth

Labor Day weekend is over and cooling season will soon come to an end. HVAC service technicians and contractors kept busy with cooling service calls all summer long, sometimes working long into the evening when the heat waves hit. Low cooling, no cooling, bad contactors and capacitors, or perhaps a condenser fan stopped working, or a unit was low on refrigerant. The HVAC technician’s duty is to get the customers’ air conditioning systems up and running before going to the next call.

Things settle down during the fall shoulder season and not having a constant sense of urgency can come as a relief, but there are still bills to pay and HVAC companies need to stay busy. Now is the time to go back through your summer service calls and reapproach customers who opted to put off necessary work on their HVAC system until after the cooling season. Turn summer service calls into cool weather sales.

Fall is also an opportune time to offer additional HVAC services like seasonal maintenance and system improvements before cold weather sets in.

    • Provide filter changes and heating system checks
    • Make sure humidification systems are clean and functional. Some customers may be interested in purchasing a new whole-house humidifier.
    • Do a system-wide airflow check to determine if sufficient air is provided to all rooms and inspect fans, dampers, and all ductwork
    • Clean condenser coils and evaporator coils to improve system performance
    • Some homes and businesses would benefit from the installation of a ductless mini-split in spaces where existing systems can’t do the work.
    • Repair leaking refrigerator lines and replace refrigerant filters
    • Sell seasonal preventive maintenance agreements to receptive customers; consider including emergency service call prioritization
    • Revisit past estimates for equipment replacements and offer those customers a special fall discount

Finally, take advantage of having some extra time by looking into tasks and projects you’ve been putting off for a while, like looking into offering financing to your customers. Consider upgrading your website or developing a new website if you don’t already have one; a basic website is better than no website at all. Smaller businesses might want to explore cloud-based website builders like Wix,  Squarespace, Weebly, etc., that provide easily customizable industry-specific templates, web hosting, and SEO setup assistance, as well as design services for those who aren’t interested in or ready for DIY.
