It was one year ago this week that the United States went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at which time HVAC work was deemed essential. Construction work was allowed to continue and HVAC technicians and contractors continued to render service such as no heating or no cooling calls, or installations that could not be postponed. One aspect of HVAC work that many businesses and homeowners chose to forego, however, was preventive maintenance. Now, a year later, there are strong indications that people are ready to get back to their HVAC maintenance regimen and make IAQ and other system improvements.
Herein lies an opportunity for HVAC contractors to recover lost PM business, generate new maintenance contracts and IAQ sales, and help get HVAC systems back on track. With the U.S. rapidly ramping up vaccinations and an outlook for the future that feels increasingly positive, people who deferred maintenance for the past year are ready to welcome workers into their homes and businesses, and many are interested in making system upgrades and installing indoor air quality products like electronic air cleaners and bipolar ionization units like the REME HALO for virus protection. Many workers who will continue working from home after the pandemic is over are upgrading systems and installing equipment such as home office split systems and whole-house humidifiers.
Spring HVAC maintenance should include an indoor air quality review. We recommend performing static pressure maps and determining proper airflow in all areas of the home or business. Proper airflow is key for temperature control and reducing particulates and microbes, and most homes and businesses can benefit from various IAQ strategies, equipment, systems and devices. HVAC contractors are advised to stay on top of availability of IAQ products. Cleaning of evaporator and condenser coils will provide greater heat exchange, and cleaning ductwork and furnaces, along with upgrading filtration, can help reduce dust and particulates in an HVAC system and ease allergy and pulmonary issues.
