Understanding power and controls in residential and commercial HVAC is critical for any field technician, as about 80% of problems on a service call are electrically related. Residential HVAC technology has made significant advances in the past decade with the introduction of microprocessors and microelectronics. Most new HVAC systems now include ECM motors, variable speed compressors, and, increasingly, smart technology. As a result, troubleshooting has become a bit more complex, so HVAC technicians need to expand their knowledge of electronics basics and what to look for.
