There are many reasons to use an installed or standalone humidifier in any home or business, the latest of which is reduced transmissibility of COVID-19 when relative humidity levels (RH) are kept between 40-60%. Here we explain the benefits of humidification, common humidifier types, and advantages of using reverse osmosis (RO) water in any humidification system.
Heated air that is properly humidified is healthier and more comfortable than dry air, which can cause mucous membranes in the throat, nasal passages and sinuses to dry out, providing an ideal breeding ground for viruses and bacterial infections. Oxygen is more easily absorbed into the blood system when RH is at a proper level, and headaches and fatigue are reduced. Humidified air feels warmer, allowing lower thermostat settings and reduced heating costs. Static electricity is dissipated, reducing shocks and interference with electronics, and proper humidity prevents drying and cracking of wood furniture, fixtures and flooring.
Two common types of humidifiers are isothermal (steam) and adiabatic (atomization), and both types benefit from using purified RO water. The reverse osmosis process forces water through a semipermeable membrane, producing RO water that is about 98% free of dissolved solids that include metals like copper, iron, lead, and arsenic, as well as VOCs like chlorine, benzene, and other harmful agents.
Humidification systems that use RO water emit cleaner vapor or mist that is healthier to breathe, and excess deposit of particulates on furniture and other surfaces – a common complaint among owners of atomizing humidifiers – is eliminated. Accumulated mineral deposits that can clog a steam humidifier are eliminated by RO water as well. Filters remain cleaner longer, reducing maintenance needs.
