A few weeks ago, an arctic front moved across the U.S., bringing single-digit temperatures to our area. The freezing weather didn’t last long, but it was enough to get HVAC and plumbing contractors’ phones ringing off the hook with customers complaining of no heat, low heat, cold rooms, frozen pipes and drains, no water, you name it. HVAC service technicians were working long days to address these weather-related problems and respond to overnight emergency calls.
One of the main reasons that many heating systems and parts failed during the arctic blast is that they were long overdue for preventive maintenance, repairs, or equipment replacement. Now that the cold snap is over and we’re experiencing some mild weather, this is a good time to address known underlying issues, because there is sure to be some freezing weather still to come.
HVAC contractors should be proactive in recommending these repairs, PM, or system upgrades to existing customers with known heating issues before temperatures drop below freezing and they find themselves in trouble once again. These customers may want to consider air balancing, whole-house humidifiers, ductless heat pump mini-splits, smart thermostats, zone damper controls, pipe heat tracing in crawlspaces or basements, installation of insulation where it is lacking, or replacement of old, inefficient HVAC equipment.
