  • Ductless Mini-Split Systems Gaining Popularity in Commercial Applications

Ductless mini-splits have been popular in the residential sector for quite some time now, but over the last few years, they’ve been finding their way into many commercial applications. Design engineers are increasingly relying on these systems for their versatility, compact design, and reliability in providing a better environment.

In commercial applications, cooling-only ductless mini-split systems are usually found in areas where heat is generated such as electrical rooms, IT/AV closets, mechanical rooms, elevator machine rooms, pump rooms, etc. Mini-split heat pumps are typically used in spaces where creature comfort is required such as conference rooms, break rooms, lobbies, lunch rooms, etc. These units are often used to supplement packaged systems, allowing for smaller designs, less ductwork, and better individual control of the facility.

Ductless mini-splits are often used in mission-critical applications as an emergency system should main HVAC systems fail. This belt-and-suspenders approach can be cost-effective when backup cooling is a must. They can also be a great inexpensive problem solver in areas where loads have changed over time, such as in rooms where heat-generating vending machines have been installed, or in offices that have added more personnel.

Commercial ductless mini-splits can be operated locally with a remote control or tied into a building system. One drawback of these systems is that while they’re very good at removing humidity through the cooling process, they cannot add humidity.
