EPH Hosts Airflow Testing & Balancing Seminars
E.P. Homiek Sheet Metal & HVAC Supply recently hosted two well-attended Residential and Light Commercial TAB/Airflow Testing, Adjusting & Balancing seminars in our Lakewood and Union locations.
The seminars began with an introduction to the many opportunities that exist for contractors and how their customers can benefit from TAB service, as proper airflow is the root of HVAC comfort and performance. The instructor, a NEBB-certified air balancer, discussed airflow testing and balancing terminology and the physics behind air and air movement and reviewed various tools including flow hoods, electronic manometers, magnehelic gauges, and vane axial flow sensors. Other areas of interest discussed during the 2.5 hour seminar were:
- How to take total external static pressure (TSP) and creating a TSP map
- Why it is so important to take static pressure on every service call
- Checking the manufacturer’s model number and blower performance chart to accurately convert static pressure to CFM
- Identifying and fixing large, unnecessary pressure drops such a dirty filters, long, undersized and/or kinked flex duct, undersized ductwork, closed dampers, crushed duct, etc.
- Measuring CFM in returns, supply, and exhaust.
- How to adjust CFM to provide different quantities of air in different areas.
- The importance of proper airflow across evaporators and heat exchangers to maximize system performance and prevent problems.
Handouts were distributed to contractors in attendance, and the instructor also provided links to instructional videos in a follow-up email for attendees to revisit and begin performing TAB in the field. Food and beverages were provided.
